Los Angeles, California – Hawthorne Community News recently visited Passport To The Heart, an arts and values program for Kindergarten conducted by Dream A World Education, Inc. You can view this video by clicking here. The Secrets of the Heart Arts Residency Programming is currently running at Juan De Anza Elementary. Sponsored by The Herb Alpert Foundation, this program uses music and dance to teach children they can make a difference in their own lives and in the world around them. Each assembly style workshop is conducted for classes who participated in the initial residency program. For Anza, this is approximately 100 students from four participating classes.
Each child receives a Passport in which they will write their name and the name of their country, America. On each page of the Passport is the name of a new “Secret”and of a country they will visit each month. They will learn rhythms and music each month and a dance from that country. They will not just learn what that “Secret” is, however, they will learn how to practice the meaning of that “Secret.” Each time they
demonstrate the “Secret” they will ask for a stamp from their teacher – just as one would get a stamp for entering a country. During classroom time teachers will reinforce the lesson by reading and discussing a book about the principle and the country they are learning about that month. The Secrets of the Heart addressed in this continuation program are Courage, Love, Creativity, Peace, Family, Giving, Beauty and Happiness. The counties visited are Guinea, West Africa, Haiti, India, Greece, Israel, America (Native Americans), Japan and Greece. This is a program that teaches music, dance, rhythms, universal principles, that actions must follow words and that the world is a global family.
