“Passport To The Heart” – Music and Dance Assemblies

Grades K-1

“Secrets of the Heart” –
Courage • Love • Creativity • Family • Giving • Beauty • Happiness • Peace

Passport To The Heart is the continuation of the Secrets of the Heart residency program. Once the initial six weeks has been completed our music and dance specialist visits your school once a month to conduct 45-60 minute standards based dance and music workshops or assemblies with the same students who have participated in the Secrets of the Heart Residency Program. This program continues through to end of the school year.

At some schools following the pledge of allegiance, the principal announces the Secret of the Heart for the month. The program begins with courage as the new secret. The entire school is invited to participate as the announcement is made: “The secret for this month is courage! How are you showing your courage today?”

Children begin each day with the Young Masters Pledge. A two-page plan is provided for teachers, recommending books which support the theme and offer additional classroom activities. Existing school curriculum ties in to the theme wherever possible and visiting programs are encouraged to join in.  Teachers may use it as they choose.

Each child receives a Dream A World Passport, where they will track the countries visited each month as they learn dances from around the world. Teachers will stamp their passports as they demonstrate the secret of the month.

Children experience the joy of learning as they sing and dance while learning core values, life skills and a little geography. In the opening “courage assembly” children visit the country of Guinea and learn Dundunmba, “the brave or strong man’s dance” and Lamba, “the healing dance.” They learn what to do if they are ever bullied or witness someone being bullied. They learn what it means to have courage – to believe in yourself. Dream A World’s Young Masters Little Wisdom books are provided for the first three months and thereafter, books are recommended that can be found in a school library.

One new secret is revealed each month until the end of the school year.  The secrets are courage, creativity, love, peace, family, giving, beauty and happiness.  The program culminates with a presentation of dances by students.

As part of Passport To The Heart, follow-up programming to Secrets of the Heart, a six week arts and values residency program, children learn rhythm, song and Dun Dun Ba, the Brave Man’s dance of Guinea, West Africa. Taught by artist Anindo Marshall who works with Dream A World Education, Inc. in Los Angeles. The “Secret of the Heart” is COURAGE.

The Secrets Of The Heart Continuation Passport Program was conducted for the 2011-2012 school year at Selma Elementary and at Gardner Elementary in Los Angeles.
