“Secrets of the Heart” in the Tewa Language
Ohkay Owingeh: The place of the strong people. “At Ohkay Owingeh Head Start & Pre-K they believe the chief priority is student learning and all students can learn to their fullest potential. By creating a caring, nurturing, and optimum learning environment, students are developing culturally, socially, emotionally, cognitively and physically. Teachers, administrators, families, and community promote high standards, expectations, and share in advancing the school’s mission.”
On September 2, children in the Ohkay Owingeh Head Start and Pre-K classes will learn about “arts of the earth” from indigenous artists from pueblos of Northern New Mexico and International Folk Artists from around the world through Dream A World Education’s 24-week Secrets of the Heart “Seedlings” program. They will learn the “secrets” in 3 languages—their native Tewa, English, and American Sign Language.
The school has the option to expand the program by calling upon the many artists from the pueblos to explore arts like pottery and silversmithing as well as traditional dance, drumming and other art forms. Preserving cultural traditions is supremely important to indigenous peoples here and around the world.
We’re grateful to Cindy Montoya, Executive Director of New Mexico School for the Arts (NMSA) for the introduction to school leadership, and to NMSA Board Member, Matthew Martinez, who is a proud member of this pueblo. We are thrilled to expand the program here in New Mexico to these amazing educators and young students.
