The “Secrets” Children Learn:

Resources

Summary

One World Drum Circles, which follows Secrets of the Heart®, is designed as a 10-12 week residency program for first grade. It is a weekly workshop presented to a maximum of 25 students in each of four classrooms. The residency can be expanded to include more classrooms.

One World Drum Circles presents arts and universal themes by teaching rhythms and songs from cultures around the world.  The secrets, taught through folklore and story themes, include wisdom, cooperation, honesty, generosity, respect, truth, intelligence, and compassion. World cultures children explore include: China, Ireland, West Africa (Ghana), Africa (Egypt), South America (Peru), North America (Ojiwbe), and Australia (Aboriginal).

  • Parent Orientation: Provides an overview of what students experience during the residency and introduces parents to the concept of a drumming circle through a group drumming activity.

  • Professional Development: Offers participating first grade teachers an opportunity to learn the program’s goals and expected outcomes and gives them a preview of some of the activities students will experience. The professional development is open to all teachers, regardless of grade level, and staff.

  • Drumming Workshops: Students learn about rhythms and patterns through a curriculum that includes language arts, vocabulary, geography and mathematics.  The curriculum is based upon the Visual and Performing Arts Standards (VAPA) for the State of California, is aligned with the Common Core Standards for language and National Core Standards.
