Thelma Houston– DAWE Advisory Board Member, Arts Advocate!
Did you watch the just-ended season of The Masked Singer? Our very own Thelma Houston was revealed as “Clock” and was one of the finalists whose identity was discovered by the judges. We’re so inspired by Thelma and her career achievements. She was supported in her youth by the Long Beach School District and believes in paying it forward by continuing to strengthen and support the impact of Dream A World and the arts education we deliver to children everywhere!
Houston was born in Leland Mississippi. Her mother, Trudy, was a cotton picker. She and her three sisters grew up primarily in Long Beach, California where through the school district there her love of music was nurtured. She knows the benefits of arts education first hand. After marrying and having two children, she joined the Art Reynolds Singers gospel group and was subsequently signed as a recording artist with Dunhill Records. Thelma’s Grammy® Award winning “Don’t Leave Me This Way” has led the way for a career filled with accomplishments that include film, television and recording including our all time favorite album made with Jimmy Webb – Sunshower!
Thelma and Dream A World Education Founder and Executive Director, Bunny Hull, met in 1972 in Las Vegas when they were performing as singers in different hotels. They became life long friends. That friendship continues with Thelma’s support of Dream A World and their weekly sushi dinners together. Thelma has recorded many of Hull’s songs throughout the years. A little known fact is that Bunny wrote her Grammy® Award winning hit song “New Attitude” for Thelma, but her producer at the time passed on it.
