Summary
The World of Photography is a 12 week residency for 5th and 6th grades. Students will learn about the world of photography through a different “lens” than the one they usually know. They will learn to apply mindfulness and patience while exploring photography before the digital era by experimenting with alternative photographic processes and even creating their own handmade equipment. The camera will become a magical box full of possibilities.
The “secrets” taught throughout the course include: seeing, perspective, identity, balance, depth, contrast, and self. The world cultures explored include: United States/Los Angeles, United Kingdom, Iraq, Persia, Italy, Paris, and the United States/Appalachia.
- Parent Orientation: Provides an overview of what students experience during the residency and introduces parents to the concept of photography through group activities.
- Professional Development: Offers participating teachers an opportunity to learn the program’s goals and expected outcomes and gives them a preview of some of the activities that students will experience. The professional development is open to all teachers and staff, regardless of grade level.
- Photography Workshops: Students learn about photography and photographic techniques through a curriculum that includes language arts, vocabulary, geography, and mathematics. The curriculum is based upon the California Arts Standards and is aligned with the Common Core Standards for language.
